What is StoryMagic?

Every learner has their own story—their interests, experiences, strengths and challenges. That is where StoryMagic begins.

Stories are everywhere: in fiction, facts, football, gaming and everyday life. Stories connect learning across English, Maths and the wider curriculum. Reading helps us access these stories, build knowledge and develop ideas we can communicate to others.

I turn your learner’s chosen interests into creative stories that motivate them to enjoy learning. Every lesson focuses on their individual learning targets, helping them master the knowledge they need to succeed and use strategies to understand, recall and apply independently.

How StoryMagic Works

Understanding your learner:

I begin by getting to know your learner over Zoom as an individual—their strengths, interests and what helps them engage. My learner-led approach uses what they enjoy to spark curiosity and build a positive connection with learning.

I explain my three-part approach to your learner: theme, learning intention and strategy. We start with a theme chosen around their interests. My role is to identify what they need to learn and select a strategy to help them achieve that lesson’s learning intention. This gives my creative lessons a clear teaching purpose.

Your learner’s voice is central throughout this process. I encourage them to tell me what helps, what feels difficult and when an approach doesn’t suit them. If a strategy isn’t working for them, I listen and adapt, exploring alternatives together to help overcome barriers to their learning.

I listen to you both about what feels difficult and what support has helped so far. Depending on their needs, I may use informal learning activities or a more formal assessment, review reports, IEPs, EHCPs and professional recommendations, and liaise with school with your permission.

Throughout this process, I explore gaps in their knowledge, how they approach learning and which strategies may suit them. Building this relationship creates a clear starting point for a personalised teaching plan.

Identify Learning Targets:

Understanding your learner:

I create an individual learning plan with clear, measurable targets and an overview of the 12-week programme. This is a flexible working document that develops as I get to know your learner and their learning more closely.

As we work together, I may discover further gaps or misconceptions that need attention. I update the plan throughout, tracking progress and adapting teaching to your learner’s needs and pace.

We review targets at the midpoint to check that we are on track. If targets are achieved sooner, we set new ones, keeping learning appropriately challenging and responsive to progress.

The plan is shared through an interactive whiteboard, where you can add notes, comments and observations if you wish. This gives us a shared space to work closely together and support your learner’s progress.

At the end of the 12 weeks, I provide a report outlining progress towards the targets, strategies that have helped and recommended next steps. You can share this with school to help inform ongoing support.

Teaching and Learning:

I draw on a wide range of specialist teaching strategies to help your learner overcome barriers and understand what they are learning.

I also consider what has already been tried at school, reviewing individual learning plans, EHCPs and existing support. Where helpful, and with your permission, I can speak with the school SENCo to understand what is working and how we can build on it.

Together, we try suitable strategies, and I explicitly teach your learner how and when to use them. I monitor how they respond and adapt teaching as needed. If an approach isn’t helping, we try something different—building a toolkit that supports their progress and growing independence.

The ultimate goal of The StoryMagic Approach is to help your learner build knowledge, understand how they learn and develop a toolkit of strategies they can use throughout their education.

Through guided practice, they learn how and when to choose strategies that help them understand new learning, tackle challenges and take their next steps.

As their confidence and skills develop, I gradually reduce support, helping them use their toolkit more independently—in school and everyday learning.

Alongside addressing gaps in knowledge, we build their ability to recognise what helps them learn and choose the tools they need for the next challenge.

They provide one to one work to support a student with a student who continually struggled with reading, phonics, phonemes etc. The student engaged well from the start, due to the quick relationship building. I can’t thank Katy enough for the support she’s given us with my son’s SEND needs and EHCP. She took the time to look through everything carefully, (even when I presented the paperwork at the very last minute), she explained what the provision meant, and helped us understand whether the support in place was really meeting his needs.

What I appreciated most was that Katy genuinely cared about my son as an individual. She listened, offered practical advice, and shared her specialist knowledge in a way that was easy to understand.
